Not Sure About Drug Rehab?

Do Narconon Participants Have to Become Scientologists?

"No" is the short answer to this question

Narconon is a network of secular drug treatment centers at which people of all religions are welcome. In fact, if a participant is, for example, a Presbyterian, they are encouraged to call upon that faith to help them in recovery.

The Goal of Narconon

The goal of Narconon is not to convert individuals to any religion, but to help them realize the dream of becoming drug-free. The effective methods used as part of the rehabilitation program were developed by Author and Humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard, but they do not “promote” Scientology. The Narconon program is based on methods of drug-free substance abuse treatment and recovery. Period.

Narconon Founder, William Benitez

William Benitez,
Founder of Narconon

The Founder of Narconon is William Benitez

The founder of Narconon, William Benitez, was not a Scientologist. He was a lifelong drug addict who came across some of L. Ron Hubbard’s writings while in prison. This is what he shared about it:

“What impressed me the most about [Hubbard's] materials was that they concentrated not only on identifying abilities, but also on methods (practical exercises) by which to develop them. I realized that drug addiction was nothing more than a "disability," resulting when a person ceases to use abilities essential to constructive survival. I found that if a person rehabilitated and applied certain abilities, that person could persevere toward goals set, confront life, isolate problems and resolve them, communicate with life, be responsible and set ethical standards, and function within the band of certainty.”

So, while L. Ron Hubbard’s writing was the inspiration for Mr. Benitez, the program had (and still has) no affiliation with Scientology as an organization. Benitez did ask for the help of Mr. Hubbard on perfecting the methods used for detoxification, and received it. While Hubbard did help develop the methods, he was not the founder of Narconon. It is much the same as Bill Wilson was the founder of AA (The first 12 step program). The Catholic Church supports and even sponsors the program, but one does not have to become Catholic in order to join the program or while in the program.

For over 40 years, Narconon has been helping people of all faiths and creeds to become and live drug-free. For more information about Narconon, Please call 1-877-782-7409.
