Some Alcohol Statistics for Ontario
Toronto, Ontario, Canada Alcoholism statistics for Ontarians include findings that 58.2 % of high school students had used alcohol in 2009, and 61% had used alcohol at some time in their life. It is of concern that for students in grade 7, 22.7% used alcohol. The percentage of students using alcohol is rising through the grades to 82.6% in grade 12. (Source: www.camh.net) Of these same students 24% were binge drinking - meaning 5 or more drinks in a session; under 3% in Grade 7 and rising to nearly 50% in Grade 12. Alcohol Policies for Ontario In April of 2011, Robert Mann of CAMH said alcohol statistics for Ontario demonstrated a need for evidence based, effective alcohol policies. Clearly, the government does not yet have the necessary policies, despite over 20 years of fighting a war against drugs, and is looking for direction in that regard. Government policy tends to place reliance upon social controls, carrots and sticks, that, as Mann says do not address the problem which is that Ontarians, as we speak, are becoming disabled and dying from alcohol addiction and alcoholism. People would appear to be getting no help. Drinking and Driving The issue of drunk driving could not be more widely advertised, or known about by teen students - yet in the 2009 CAMH survey, 34,000 students (18%) reported that they had driven while drunk in the past year. If only 1% of these teenagers were involved in fatal accidents, that would be 340 avoidable deaths, if they were provided with effective drunk driving education in their schools. One quarter of a million children are drinking alcohol at hazardous levels, in terms of World Health Organization (WHO) directives. These children are drinking under age and at a time when the law requires that for driving, they must have zero blood alcohol content. (Reference article) Effective Alcohol Abuse Prevention Campaign The reality is that slick advertising about the risks of alcohol abuse are not getting through to the children. Curbing access to alcohol has never stopped a determined alcohol abuser from getting their alcohol supplies. Narconon International has an evidence based school alcohol and drug education program that has been proven to get through to children. Thar program has respect for the ability of children to make good choices when provided with appropriate factual information. Many school talks about drugs play up the emotional side, mothers appear to talk about how they have lost their child due to a drunk driving accident, resulting in stressed students leave the room in tears. By the weekend they have recovered, and are on the roads drinking and driving. Messages to children about drinking and driving are not about us, and the public cost. Children need to be handed the facts, unemotionally, and handed the responsibility of making the right decision next time they are faced with making a decision about whether or not to drink and drive. Narconon can be contacted for more details about its school alcohol and drug education program. There are at least 34,000 children today who live in Ontario whose life might be saved, and families saved from distress that lasts a lifetime if schools would only reach out for help, on behalf of their children, and use the Narconon drug and alcohol education program. The first part of our program eliminate the toxic residues from alcohol and other drugs from the body, using the Narconon Sauna Detoxification program. The second part of our program includes the Narconon social rehabilitation steps where the recovering alcoholics are given tools to get back their self-esteem and to be in control of their life.
